Extended warranties usually only benefit store associates, who earn a commission for tricking you into making a purchase. But AppleCare+ is different.
Apple recently updated its AppleCare+ protection plan to provide unlimited repairs for your iPhone. Previously, you would get two heavily discounted repairs a year for any accidental damage you managed to sustain. Now, even if you throw it away and smash it every week, you can keep fixing it. But that’s not the only reason AppleCare+ is great.

A regular extended warranty usually does only what it says it does – extends your statutory warranty by a year or so. If you buy a gadget or appliance at a store, a salesperson may try to sell you. Then, when your gadget breaks and you try to file a claim, you’ll find out how hostile a company is to its customers.
For example, if the statutory manufacturer’s warranty covers the repair, then Extended warranty providers may refuse to honor, Makes you wonder why you bought it in the first place. These extended warranties may be managed by a third-party company, which may make the whole thing more difficult.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, you should assess possible repair costs, check what is covered, and investigate the claims process and reputation of extended warranty service. Without this, you may appear to be buying peace of mind, but you may actually just be buying future headaches.
If you’re in Europe, you really should think twice before buying an extended warranty. Amazon’s German site, for example, tries to sell you an extended warranty every time you buy electronics, “extending” the warranty to two years.But in Germany, and even most EU countries, the minimum warranty period is already two years, and some suppliers Three years are offered as standard.

AppleCare+ is easier. You get accidental damage coverage for a flat fee and a flat discounted fee for any repairs. For example, if you smash the screen or glass back of your iPhone, it will cost you $29 to fix it. Now you can get unlimited repairs instead of just two a year.
Of course, not everyone needs AppleCare+. But if you’re clumsy or paranoid, it might be worth it, and you don’t have to waste a day or fill out forms to use it. You simply take your iPhone (or whatever device you purchased AppleCare+ for) to your local Apple Store and pick it up from there. Often, repairs can be done while you wait. There’s even an extra tier to cover several incidents or loss or theft, as long as you have Find My Tracking enabled.

It sounds like an ad for AppleCare+, but if that’s the kind of thing you’re looking for, Apple’s version is really good. Again, it’s not for everyone. Apple is already pretty good at fixing things under a regular warranty, and store employees seem to have a fair amount of discretion to help. I once took a malfunctioning iPhone I bought in a country with a one-year warranty to an Apple Store in Germany, but since the legal warranty in Germany is two years, the employee just replaced the iPhone.

AppleCare+, like much of Apple’s business, is aimed at individuals, not companies.One option is AppleCare for Enterprise, but that’s actually not the same as just buying the cover for a single device. For most of us, if we’re careful, it’s fine to save on AppleCare+ and rely on the already great service in Apple Stores. But that leaves small, distributed businesses in a bind.
“At my agency, we own several Apple devices (iMac, MacBook Pro, phone, tablet) and AppleCare simply wasn’t a good option for us – but not for any of the usual reasons,” mapa barraganfounder Design agency Tell Lifewire via email.
“AppleCare is only purchased by (and for individuals) individuals, not companies,” Barragán continued. “And the biggest problem is that AppleCare is only available to people who live in a specific country. Remote work and this kind of international business is becoming more common every day, but Apple hasn’t caught up to it. The whole system AppleCare needs to be more robust, to be a good solution for today’s businesses, digital nomads, etc.”
Finally, AppleCare+ is definitely not for everyone, and in iPhone only up to $10 per month, it might be worth putting that money aside and paying for the repairs yourself. But if you’re paranoid or clumsy, this is a really good option for extra protection.
