While layoffs are being discussed across the tech world, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed the reasons behind Google’s decision to lay off 12,000 employees during an internal meeting on Tuesday.

Pichai said he had consulted with the company’s founders and board of directors when making the decision to cut the 6%, Bloomberg reported.
Bloomberg quoted Pichai as saying: “If you don’t take clear and decisive action early, we may complicate the problem and make the situation worse. These are the decisions I need to make.”
On Friday, Pichai sent an email to his employees about the layoffs, citing a difficult economic cycle, as previously reported. “I have some bad news to share. We have decided to lay off approximately 12,000 people. We have sent a separate email to affected US employees. In other countries, this process will take longer, Because of local laws and practices,” he wrote in his email.
He also reportedly added that since all bonuses are tied to company performance, annual bonuses for all senior vice presidents will also be significantly reduced this year because the idea is to hold everyone accountable.
Just a few weeks ago, other tech giants such as Facebook parent Meta, Twitter and Amazon also announced mass layoffs to cut costs.
