Supez has in a downturn. Not personally, mind you, but after the monotonous events of 2017 Justice League, we can say that the future of Superman on screen has always been uncertain. Then, last week, Henry Cavill confirmed he would be donning the cape again, and Warner Bros. Discovery revealed that, starting today, director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran will oversee DC Studios, a new entity within the company, Committed to making movies and series based on DC characters.
Cavill’s return as Iron Man provides Gunn et al. There is a unique opportunity to transform heroes. In his previous shows, the actor’s Superman has been serious and gloomy. But in an interview type Regarding his return, Cavill said, “The future is bright for this character. I’m excited to tell a story with a super-happy Superman” — a quote that shows those who take over the characters’ big-screen fortunes know what they’re doing .
Recognize that Superman can (maybe, should) fun is just one of many things the new DC Overlord needs to do to bring him back to life.Except for the troubled heroes seen in Escape man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (aka The Age of Zack Snyder), a good Supes movie needs to show him as a guy who helps those around him in his chosen career.Let’s see if someone does it because they enjoy your meal It’s not because they feel compelled to bear enormous pressure and cost.
When it comes to his work, Clark Kent is a must in any Superman movie. He probably wouldn’t be as visually spectacular without the cape, and, yes, the mild-mannered reporter isn’t as appealing as flying through the air and hitting people with heat vision at the same time, but Superman needs to connect with humans.Even ignoring the idea of ”he’s just a random superhero without his experience in Smallville”, Clarke daily planet Push the story often. Without it, Superman is just a drab, iron-fisted doer of good.
Clark Kent also offers something else: connections to other characters. Yes, there is Lois Lane – the smart, stubborn, altruistic Lois Lane. But also grumpy editor Perry White, novice reporter and thrill-seeker Jimmy Olsen, superscientist and part-time superhero John Henry Irons, the Kents, Bibbo, Morgan Edge, neighbor bragging Steve Lombard and more. Superman has the strongest supporting characters in superhero comics outside of Spider-Man, and they hardly ever appear for more than a second in any adaptation. Giving them full character arcs in the DC Extended Universe would do wonders.
Why? Because Superman stories are rarely about Superman. When the eponymous hero is stable and secure about who he is, and committed to helping everyone around him, it’s nearly impossible for him to actually be involved in every story himself. That’s not to say there no Good story about Iron Man closely related to the stake in question –All-Star Superman, The Death of Superman and its sequels and “The Man Who Had It All” come to mind – but it’s perfectly acceptable to let other people have the emotional arcs and Superman take charge of other things.
Thankfully, with Gunn taking charge of DC’s creative direction moving forward, the last should be easy to pull off.Throughout his career, Gunn has never been afraid to be weird (see: Every Guardians of the Galaxy movie), and quite frankly, Superman could use a little weirdness. This character has eight years of truly absurd, imaginative classics and enough ludicrous details – Super Dog Krypton! Shrinking the city of Kando! Super ventriloquism! – Fill several movies. Let Batman be the one who keeps things grounded; the Superman movie should be allowed to soar and enrich the imagination. Time to let him fly.
