NXT Group and NXTFactor entrepreneur David Zhao’s portfolio includes Chubby Cattle, X-Pot and an organization fighting cyberbullying.
David Zhao and his partner Yang Haibin have been inclined to start a business since they were young, and they are both included in the Forbes 2022 30 Under 30 Dining List.
“The couple is elevating the technology of traditional Chinese hotpot, including robotic servers and buses, and high-end laser projectors that project customized media for each dish onto customers’ tables,” Forbes said of David Zhao and Yang Haibin wrote. “Chubby Cattle has expanded to five U.S. locations, raised $28 million, and is on track to see $20 million in revenue this year.”
Zhao’s efforts have been successful in recent years, but they didn’t start out this way.
After opening the first Chubby Cattle restaurant in Las Vegas in 2013, just a few years out of high school, he and Yang endured three years without a paycheck before launching a profitable business.
“90% of restaurants fail within the first few years. It’s because people think that when you start a restaurant, it’s all about creating great food, right? You have great food, you love how it tastes, That’s it,” explains David Zhao, podcast host Shawn P. Walchef Cali Grill Media.
“You have to be an expert in all of these to have an edge in the restaurant space, to be profitable and to be scalable.”
None of the lessons learned from the experience could have prepared Zhao, or any business owner, for the aftermath of the 2020 pandemic. Zhao had to halt expansion plans as the entire city of Las Vegas was under restrictions during the public health-related shutdown.
Yet the perseverance that got them through their first three years in business helped them fine-tune their vision, to the point that the businessmen agreed to sell their houses and cars to fund delayed projects.
“We stand ready to fully commit to these projects.”
“I think a key factor for our success is to have a partner who has the same vision as me, like if it’s a new project, we’re willing to sell everything immediately,” says David Zhao. “If the company needs it, we need it and we’ll sell everything we have to make sure we can continue.”
It’s this mamba spirit and unwillingness to give in that keeps David Chao motivated to continue his career, from a teenage freelancer writing reviews of Asian restaurants to an entrepreneur, activist and investor, and Owns a growing $100 million restaurant brand. Zhao’s future is bright.
