Facebook’s ambitions have often manifested in chaotic, unpredictable ways, and have had far-reaching societal ramifications years after they were implemented. So when the company decides to change its name to Meta and spend billions of dollars on building its own virtual alternative reality, the move is bound to have some major consequences — if nothing else, for Meta itself.
