the idea The idea that machine intelligence will one day take over the world has long been a staple of science fiction. But given the rapid development of consumer-grade artificial intelligence tools, that fear has become closer to reality than ever in the past few months. The generative AI boom has fueled both excitement and apprehension, leaving many uneasy about the future of this apparently powerful but still nascent technology. This week, for example, the nonprofit Center for Artificial Intelligence Safety released a short statement warning that society should take AI as seriously as an existential threat, as it does nuclear war and pandemics.
this week at gadget labwe spoke with WIRED Senior Writer Will Knight about just how dangerous AI really is, and what guardrails we can put in place to prevent a robot apocalypse.
